A young enterpreneur with a passion for beauty

  By Abel Mutiso
On entering the premises’ of the natural Power Health and Beauty consultants, one would mistakenly think it’s a medical clinic or Abel Mutiso is actually a medical doctor. He is a keen listener and once he understands you problem, he recommends or dispenses the right solution.

The 26 year old entrepreneur owns Natural power health and beauty consultants, a company that deals with beauty and cosmetics products mainly imported from the USA.
“Sometimes we source my products locally from supplements Kenya “he says

“Since I was a small boy, i loved beauty and saved money to buy cosmetics while in school. When I finished my “O”levels it was clear I my mind I wanted to join the beauty industry” Says Abel at his afya Cooperative House Office, located on Tom Mboya Street, Nairobi, next to the Globe round about.

After school he joined unity school of beauty and did a diploma course in beauty.
“I did not stay long before getting a job at Dominion Beauty consultants’ a supplier of beauty products and cosmetics”

It’s from here that he learnt about the problems of the urban dwellers.
“Demand for weight loss or gain and hair growth particularly among women is on the rise” he says.

Most of his clients are in their thirties onwards and for the 4years he has been in this business; Abel has also learnt that men have problems Mainly with Libido, erectile failure and premature ejaculation.

Abel keeps an updated website on newly-approved beauty products from the USA and a portfolio of all his past clients for easy referrals.

“People often mistake me for a young doctor but what we give are remedies. We are fully registered by the government. Clients must be aware of people who peddle medicines claiming they can treat their reproductive problems” he warns.

“More over counterfeit are on the rise and one must really buy from genuine sources”

On counterfeits, he says lack of strong legislation and law enforcement system provides fertile environment where the trade thrives.Profitibility is the main driving force into counterfeits given the big profit margin that traders in fake products get.

His product costs range from sh. 2500/- tosh. 7000/-.”I survive mostly on referrals as Cosmetics are sensitive and if a product does not work for someone nor has side effects be sure you will not get a referral.”

He does not shy away from revealing that some beauty products can have side effects while others do not. It depends on the problem you gave and the advice you get. It very crucial to deal with a professional, he says.

His office is always packed with several clients waiting for their turn to buy products. Among fast moving products are: Hair dyes, facial products, baldness creams, stretch mark removers and some that reduce or aid in gaining weight.

A quick check in his books of account show that on average he makes good profits, which have kept him going.

“Am not very good at being employed and that why I quit my first job only after one year, am a good learner and believe in myself”

He delivers to his clients in Nairobi and its environs but rely on courier services for clients in other part of the country.

Due to increasing demand, he has plans to open up other offices in Mombasa, Kisumu and Nakuru in the near future

“The more you are in the beauty industry, the more you understand your client needs, you can’t know it all, but each day is a learning process.”
