Kenya ‘s Sofapaka demolished Tanzania’s Simba Sports club 3-0 in a
thrilling friendly match staged at the Dar es salaam National Stadium
on Thursday afternoon.
It was a poor evening for Simba coach Cirkovic Milovan who was
left scratching his head in disbelief as Simba were 'mauled" by their
Kenya opponents before their home supporters.
It was Kenya’s leading scorer in the Kenya Premier League(KPL) John
Barasa who once played for Tanzania Yanga became the 'destroyer in
Chief" scoring a brace to silence Simba’s chanting fans.
Simba face a daunting task on Tuesday when they face off with
Azam FC in the eagerly awaited Community Shield match clash.
Two minutes into the game, Sofapaka missed what could have been the
match-opener when Danson Kago broke through, only to see his close
range effort fly a few centimetres wide. As expected, Simba reacted
swiftly and fluffed two easy chances in the fifth and seventh minutes,
the culprits being Mrisho Ngassa and Edward Christopher.
Christopher, who played an inspiration role for Simba U-20 team’s
Super8 triumph a few weeks ago, cleverly beat two defenders James
Situma and Edgar Ochieng just outside the box, but his shot narrowly
missed target. In the 18th minute, Simba defender Komalmbil Keita
handled the ball in the box in desperate efforts to clear a dangerous
ball.
The referee never hesitated to award Sofapaka the penalty, and Baraza
made no mistake with the resulting spotkick, sending goalie Juma
Kaseja the wrong way for a 1-0 half time lead. Simba moved up a gear
after the goal and enjoyed the lion’s share of the last 15 minutes of
the first half, but inept finishing cost them dearly. Christopher’s
shot went wide in the 30th minute and the new signing Ghanaian Daniel
Akuffor shot off target five minutes later and the Msimbazi Reds
pressed upfront for an equaliser.
In the 57th minute, Baraza came into the picture again, this time with
a superb shot before Joseph Nyaga sealed the score in the 66th minute
off a Collins Shivash pass.
Line ups:
Simba- Juma Kaseja, Shomari Kapombe, Amir Maftah, Pascal Ochieng,
Komalmbil Keita, Mwinyi Kazimoto, Mrisho Ngassa, Salim Kinje, Daniel
Akuddor, Haruna Moshi and Edward Christopher/Kigi Makasi.
Sofapaka- Duncan Ochieng, Anthony Kimani, James Situma, Eogag Ochieng,
George Owino, Collins Okoth, Osborn Monday, Danson Kago, Joseph Nyaga,
Humphrey Mieno and John Baraza.
